What is your business worth?

Most small businesses sell on a multiple of Seller's Discretionary Earnings (SDE), the total cash the business produces for one owner. This gives you a realistic range and shows what would raise it.

What would raise your number

  • At least 30% of revenue is recurring or under contract+0.3x, about $70,500 more
  • No single customer is more than 15% of revenue+0.3x, about $70,500 more
  • Key processes are written down so someone else can run them+0.3x, about $70,500 more

I built a business for 21 years and sold it. If you want to get yours ready, let's talk.

How this works

Seller's Discretionary Earnings (SDE) is the total cash the business produces for one full time owner. It starts with net profit, then adds back money a new owner would get to keep.

Your owner salary, because a buyer steps into that paycheck. Personal perks, because those are owner spending, not business costs. One time expenses, because they will not repeat. Depreciation and amortization, because they are accounting entries, not cash out the door. Interest, because a buyer brings their own financing.

The multiple starts at 1.8x and rises 0.3x for each yes on the Exit Readiness checklist, up to 3.6x. The range runs 0.3x below and above that multiple.

Market context: BizBuySell reported the 2025 median small business sold for about 2.61 times cash flow (SDE), across 9,586 transactions. See the report.

Important: This is an educational estimate, not an appraisal. Industry, location, size, and deal terms all move real multiples.

Next step

Build it to sell, even if you never do.

The things that raise your multiple are the same things that give you your time back.
